Storyboard artist Sam Hudecki’s storyboarding techniques were my key precedent and inspiration for this project. Although Hudecki uses digital software to render his illustrations, he is an advocate for working with traditional pen and paper. Hudecki utilises the traditional technique during his initial sketch process. He later renders the illustrations digitally; as seen with his professional work and in his book “Blade Runner 2049: The Storyboard” (2021).
Inspired by Hudecki’s traditional storyboard methods of traditional pencil and paper; I aim to draw the storyboards traditionally with a mix of pen and pencil on paper.
The aim of this project was to traditionally illustrate a reimagined storyboard of “The Training Room” scene, with a focus on Gurney’s (older character) view. This creative ‘angle’ focuses the movements, camera angles and story on Gurney to make him appear as the protagonist; whereas in the Dune movie, he is a supporting character.
I followed an animation-like sequence where the frames of an action are close together to smoothly flow to convey character movement, rather than a traditional title sequence where they only show one shot per camera angle or key movement from the character in focus.
