I was also a competitor, and to calm my nerves before my fights I drifted my focus to my fellow competitors and took photos.

I acknowledge that there were other photographers there that post sharp, single photographs on their website for athletes to buy. I wanted to create a point of difference from the other photographers by using three horizontal panels to create a story of how the competitors fought each other, and not just highlighting a big throw or pin down from one of the athletes fighting. There are many aspects to a Judo competition aside from the throw, and many diverse emotions that I believe were best captured in black and white.

After valued feedback from my previous photos of the Slalom athletes, I incorporated a slightly slower shutter speed to capture movement blur, to convey movement, direction and speed.

I used my Canon EOS M6 M2 with a SIGMA contemporary 30mm prime lens during the competitions.
